“There’s a place for us”

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

West Side Story features incredible songs such as “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” and “I Feel Pretty,” and many more.

The classic lives on in the film remake directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Ariana DeBose in her Oscar-winning performance!

This will be our 26th annual “teen” show, for students who wish to pursue their craft at a high level.  All of our workshops at the Academy are run according to high professional standards; however, this particular workshop includes a special focus on training students who may wish to pursue musical theatre as a career or wish to take their skills to the next level.  Alumni of our teen shows over the years have gone on to careers in professional theatre, including the Stratford Festival, Mirvish, and even Broadway.

We very carefully choose our shows for this workshop each year to ensure that there are meaty roles for all of our star performers, a powerful musical score, and excellent dance opportunities, so that all of our cast have the chance to perform as true “triple threats.”  We also look for shows that weigh in on powerful, and often difficult social issues as an integral part of our time together. Our aim is to provide a safe space in a circle format to discuss and air different ideas and opinions about the themes and issues of the shows.  In this way, we can learn more about each other as fellow humans, and truly know what it’s like to “walk in someone else’s shoes.”  West Side Story is an epic show that give us the perfect opportunity to do all of the above.
